Demeter was the great Olympian goddess of agriculture, grain, and bread, the main person that helped keep man kind alive. She also commanded over the first of the Mystery Cults which promised its initiates the path to a blessed afterlife. Demeter was portrayed as a mature woman, often crowned and holding a bunch of wheat and and a torch.
