Myth

The legend of Demeter is ancient and probably went back to the Olympian gods. Demeter had a daughter named Persephone. Persephone was taken by Hades, god of the underworld and forced to eat a pomegranate seed.Demeter searched the world for Persephone with great sorrow and pain, which led her to the start of a great scarcity of food..
Eventually, Zeus ordered Hades to let Persephone go. Since she had tasted food in the Underworld she was compelled to spend a third of every year there. So every year Persephone spent the winters in the underworld as Hades wife and returned home with her mother, Demeter during the spring. This brought great joy to Demeter and she began to re harvest food and grain.Demeter and Persephone were so close, they became known as  "the Two Goddesses" or even "the two Demeters."
Many myths Demeter searched for Persephone as an old woman and came upon the city of Eleusis. She was welcomed the family of King Celeus. She became their nurse and looked after their son, Demophon. She tried to make him immortal by giving him ambrosia and holding him in the fire every night to burn away his mortality. Interrupted in this task by Celeus' wife, Demeter revealed her true identity, and promised Demophon heroic honors and health, Demeter ordered for a temple to be built. in this temple she withdrew and released a universal famine until Zeus ordered for Persephone to be released. This was the basis of great myths for the city Eleusis
